Korean Conflict

The Madison unit of the South Dakota National Guard was not activated during the Korean Conflict. Many from Lake County were sent to Korea while serving their two-year stint in the regular Army. An accurate listing is not available at this time.

Of the 130 South Dakota service people killed during the Korean Conflict, four are known to be from Lake County.

Army Sergeant Gerald B. Bowden was killed in action July 9, 1953.
Gerald D. Kappler was an army private who died while he was missing July 16, 1950.
Guy E. Mitchell, Jr., a first lieutenant in the army, was killed in action on Sept. 19, 1950.
Army PFC Clarence C. Rundel died of wounds April 18, 1953.
